Painting is about looking and 'seeing' intently. We all see a subject differently. I hope my work challenges the viewers notion of landscape.
My Inspiration
"Nature is the main source for my painting. Landscapes offer a lifetime of discovery remembering that the land - ground - is archaic and has a language all it's own. Against that permanence an ever changing wind, light & seasonal variations construct a different grammar so to speak.
Repeated site visits mark making in oil pastel, informs the final piece combined with memory, in oil on linen applied with mainly palette knife in an impasto fashion.
Happy accidents reconstruct my intentions and forms tend to allow for ambiguities with different aspects of the painting leaping out at you. A casual look reveals the whole whilst closer scrutiny catches the eye in the lumps and bumps of paint scumbled onto the surface. An oscillation between the two occurs.
Energy and dynamism are a critical element alongside colour; here natural selection seems to choose itself and is a result of a spontaneous response to the image.
